Yuan Xiao Jie (the Lantern Festival), also known as the Shang Yuan Jie, is the first major festival after the Spring Festival and is a traditional Chinese festival which has more than 2000 years’ history, starting during the Western Han Dynasty (202 B.C. - 8 A.D.).

The first month of the lunar calendar is called "yuán yuè (元月)”, and the ancients called "night" as "xiāo (宵)", so the 15th day of the first month in the year (of the lunar calendar), "the first full moon night", is called Yuan Xiao Jie (Lantern Festival).
